Our Push For New Products – No Pie In The Sky Story

10 May 2008

Those of us from KZN will be familiar with the Wareings brand of pies. These pies are produced under the Blue Ribbon brand and can be found in supermarkets and convenience stores across the province.

However, what many of us don’t know is that these popular convenience meals are now going to be found on the shelves of Gauteng outlets.

These aren’t just any pies, they’ve been around since 1863 when they were baked under the brand name of BB Pies at our Durban bakery which was then known as Bakers Bread & Confectionary.

In 1983 Bakers Bread acquired a well known family owned bakery called Wareing Bread & Confectionary located in the Pinetown area, and from that day forward BB Pies were known as Wareings Pies. Other changes happened in 1983. Whereas previously BB Pies were produced by a mainly hand operated line it now evolved to a fully automated pie line including cryogenic freezing, which is a process that freezes pies after baking to a sub zero temperature to capture that just baked freshness.

Having been around for 145 years means that a fresh baked BB Pie would could have been sampled by Ghandi in 1893 (curried vegetable?) or by Winston Churchill when he arrived in Durban in 1899 as a correspondent covering the Anglo Boer War.

So when you bite into today’s Wareings pie, you’re sampling more than a delicious snack, you’re tasting part of South Africa’s unique history.

Keep an eye out for your favourite Wareings Pie and introduce your taste buds to one of South Africa’s favourite meals – ever since 1863.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK OF YOUR FAVOURITE WAREINGS PIE AND WIN A MONTHS WIRTH OF WAREINGS PIE DINNERS. SEND YOUR EMAIL TO steven.mallach@premierfoods OR GIVE YOUR WRITTEN SUBMISSION TO YOUR INVOCOMS COORDINATOR. COMPETITION ENDS 30 JUNE – SO GET MUNCHING.
